Cognitive-Communication
Language difficulties after brain injury can be more subtle (cognitive-communication disorders). Challenges with concentration, attention, and memory in addition to decreased insight and awareness impacts higher level communication skills. Therapy addresses improving skills and strategy usage to strengthen:
- Memory/recall skills
- Higher-level deduction skills
- Idioms/expressions and humour – understanding and usage
- Social pragmatic abilities including: awareness of facial/body language and voice intonation, rules for conversation turn-taking, maintenance and conclusion, awareness of appropriate communication expectations in various environment e.g. social and workplace
